Thaipusam: A Hindu Festival in Singapore ~ 2014

Thaipusam Hindu Festival Singapore 09

Up until last week, we had never heard of the Hindu Thaipusam Festival.  Ignorance abound, when friends told us that men would be piercing themselves with fishhooks and skewers, and then carrying jugs of milk and elaborate kavadi throughout downtown Singapore, we just had to check it out!

We did a quick google search to find the when and where, and then got straight into the action.  Group after group of men sacrificing themselves were followed by family and friends who were chanting, singing, and dancing their encouragement.  The kavadi varied from the elaborate Las Vegas strip style with flashing lights, to the more simplistic milk-jugs-hanging-from-fishhooks-pierced-through-nipples.

Here’s a look at some of the action.  We’ll definitely check this festival out again next year.  And who knows, maybe we’ll make the 4km pilgrimage ourselves!  :)
